AES Ohio Wants to Raise Electric Bills Again!
OCC Calls for Fair, Affordable Rates for Consumers
If you’re thinking “enough is enough,” now is the time to speak up.
AES Ohio has filed for the first new multi-year rate case under Ohio House Bill 15, seeking to increase what residential consumers pay for electric distribution service.
If approved, AES Ohio’s proposal would increase delivery charges by more than $143 million, over three years (2027 to 2029) – costs that would ultimately be paid by consumers.
This Isn’t the First Increase
AES Ohio’s latest request comes on top of a series of recent rate hikes, including:
- 2024: $168 million distribution rate increase approved in a separate case (Case No. 24-1009-EL-AIR).
- 2022: $160 million PUCO-approved increase under AES Ohio’s fourth electric security plan (Case No. 22-900-EL-SSO).
- 2018: $267 million charged to consumers for AES Ohio’s Smart Grid Plan (Case No. 18-1875-EL-GRD).
Taken together, these repeated increases are putting growing pressure on household budgets – especially for families already struggling with rising costs.
OCC is Standing Up for Consumers
The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) has intervened in this case to represent the interests of AES Ohio’s nearly 484,000 residential consumers.
OCC’s team of attorneys, accountants, economists and utility experts is working to ensure that consumers pay no more than necessary; rates are just, reasonable, and affordable; and AES Ohio—not consumers—bears the burden of proving any increase is justified.
